Your car is one of the most significant investments you are likely to make. The cost of the car, road tax, insurance, and your yearly MOT. Not to mention the cost lessons, your test and those unfortunate times where the car needs some extra attention from the garage. It makes sense that you want to have your vehicle as secure as possible, and one of the ways you can keep your car protected is by having an immobiliser fitted.
What Are Car Immobilisers?
A car immobiliser is an extra security device that will stop your car from starting if the wrong key or code is used. Car immobilisers come in different forms. You can have an electronic immobiliser and a physical immobiliser.
A physical version is something like a steering wheel lock.
Some newer models of car will have an electronic engine immobiliser. When the key is inserted, it will send a code to the ECU. The ECU is the electronic control unit. If the code is correct, your car will then start.
If someone tries to steal the car by hot wiring, it or the code input is wrong; the immobiliser will prevent the vehicle from starting.

If you have a car model that doesn’t have an immobiliser fitted, then you should get one fitted right away.
According to Statista in the UK there were 113 thousand motor vehicle thefts in England and Wales in 2019/2020. While the rate is dropping, there is more that car owners can do to keep their car safe. We all know that you can’t keep your car in the garage all day every day.
So investing in a car immobiliser is one of the best things you can do.
Immobiliser supply and installation in older car models will stop would-be thieves from taking your vehicle. We specialise in car and van security and know just how vital an immobiliser is in car theft prevention.

Types of Car Immobilisers
There are a wide variety of immobilisers for vans, cars, large trucks and even trailers. Here is a rundown of some of the types of car immobilisers.
Ghost Immobiliser
A ghost immobiliser is a super discreet, and incredibly effective immobiliser. This actually protects your vehicle from key cloning. There has been an increased rise in cars that have been stolen using key cloning technology. A ghost immobiliser can also offer you protection from hacking and key theft. A critical part of the ghost immobiliser technology is that it can prevent a vehicle from being driven. Until a unique code sequence is entered to disarm the immobiliser.
Engine Run Lock
The engine run lock, or key out system, is ideal for people who need to be in and out of the car, as they can remove the keys from the ignition without the engine cutting out. This is ideal for many delivery drivers. If anyone should attempt to move the vehicle, during this time, the engine will be immobilised.
Thatcham Approved Cat 2 Immobilisers
Thatcham 2 is the industry standard for a self-activating immobiliser. Certified immobilisers must divert at least two circuits; this is usually the ignition circuit and the fuel pump circuit. There are other available options, for example, they may choose to intercept the starter motor circuit, from the key fob to the relay.
In general, there are two main types of car immobilisers used. These are usually a touch key immobiliser or a transponder immobiliser.
With a touch key type, you will be required to touch the code key to a receptacle within the car. This will disarm the system, and your car will start. With a transponder type, you will need to carry a small chip on your keyring. When the key is placed in the transmission to the transponder is then read by the immobiliser. And in turn, this will disarm this type of system.
Thatcham Research is a not-for-profit group who work solely with manufacturers, trading bodies and law. They actively promote car security and increase safety standards.
The Thatcham group has a range of categories, which each security device fits into. In general, this is the car industry benchmark, and there are eight categories in total. There are also security devices that are not Thatcham approved, and these are simply called Q class devices.

Car Immobiliser Pricing
As mentioned above, your car is probably one of your most expensive investments. And the idea that adding a car immobiliser might cost some money can put some people off. However, just like the insurance that you pay for your car, the immobiliser is a non-negotiable when it comes to car security. And, you might be tempted to purchase a car immobiliser kit and try and fit it yourself; there are no guarantees that this will work correctly.
You should ask yourself a couple of quick questions –
- Do you want to guarantee that your car alarm is correctly installed?
- Would you also like a warranty and your purchase to be protected?
- Could you put a price on knowing that your car is safe from would-be thieves?
Of course, the answer to the first one is yes, and the only way to ensure that your car immobiliser is correctly installed is it to take it to professionals like us. We can fit your car immobiliser for as little as £200!
